Dholpur

Dholpur (also Dhaulpur) is a city in eastern-most parts of the Rajasthan state of India. It is the administrative headquarters of Dholpur District and was formerly seat of the Dholpur princely state, before Independence.

Dhaulpur became a separate district in 1982 comprising four tehsils of Bharatpur: Dholpur, Rajakhera, Bari and Baseri. It is bordered by Bharatpur district of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh to the north, Madhya Pradesh to the south, Karauli district to the west and Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to the east.

Dholpur is between Agra and Gwalior (each about 55 kilometres from Dholpur) and is 250 kilometres from Delhi. It is on the main Central Railway track and the National Highway No. 3, on Delhi-Bombay Road. At its railway station, the town name is spelled "Dhaulpur".It is famous for "STONES".

History

Dholpur, according to the Epics, was initially known as Dhawalgiri, later on Dhaulagir, and now as Dholpur. Before the battle of Mahabharat this whole area was under the Yadavs whose different branches were spread over the entire area extending from the south of the river Chambal. Col. James Todd in his book Annals and Antiquities of Rajputana has mentioned that the area was submerged under the sea during the Ramayan period. The key to the ancient history of Dholpur is the ruins of strength the fort which is on the bank of river Chambal.

During the second phase of ancient history, the ruins of Mahabharat period could be seen and around the temple of Muchukund ji. According to the Shastras, Muchukund was a very illustrious king before Krishna. During the war between Devtas and Danavas, King Muchukund sided with the devtas and was instrumental in their victory. Indra was so pleased was that he asked Muchukund to have a boon. Muchukund was so tired that he asked Indra to allow him to sleep peacefully and if anyone should wake him up, Muchukund�s angry gaze would burn him to ashes. Mahabharat reveals that during one of the battles with the demons Krishna came to the spot where Muchukund was sleeping. He put his pitamber on the sleeping Muchukund. The demon thinking him to be Krishna woke him up, and thus the demon was burnt to ashes, and thus the life of Krishna was saved. The event took place, in a spot very near to the Muchukund Ji�s temple, where the ruins of old palaces still exist. The appearance of these, however does not seem to be that old.

Tomar Rule

Raja Dholan Deo Tonwar was a ruler of Dholpur and most likely the name of city was changed to Dholpur after him. He resided 10 km south west of Dholpur at a place called Bilpur near chambal where a fort still exists.[1] His descendants are still living in the area and till independence were rulers of many small chieftainships like Kayasthapad and many villages in Morena and Gwalior. He was ruler of coutnry between Chambal and Banganga. The Dholeshwar Mahadev Temple built by this Raja was washed away in Chambal floods of 1868 AD.[2] The Tomars lost sovereignty to Jadu's of Karauli.

Brief History

The dynasty belongs to the Deswali clan of Jats and traces its descent from Jai Singh, who acquired territories near Bairat, south of Alwar. Loyal to Emperor Anang Rao Puar, he received the hereditary title of Rana in ca 1068, together with the usual Royal insignia of a parasol and chamra or yak-tail. A century later, his descendent Rana Palun Singh, transferred his allegiance to Prithvi Raj Chauhan, and was slain beside him in 1175. Rana Birhan Pal, son of Palun, settled at Bamroli, near Agra in 1195. It is from this place that the family derives their name. His descendants ruled there until driven out by the Mughal Governor of Agra in 1367. Rana Ratan Pal, eighth in descent from Birhan Pal, joined the service of the Tuar ruler at Gwalior. His son supported Raja Barsingh Dev of Gwalior, helping him to win his independence from their Muslim overlords in 1375. He married a Jat lady and later settled at Baghthurra, near Gohad.

Rana Sujan Deo, fifth in descent from Rana Ratan Pal, received Gohad from Raja Man Singh of Gwalior in 1505. His title to that state being later recognised by the Emperor Sikander Lodi. Thereafter, his descendants gradually extended and added to their territories, which eventually amounted to 56 mahals or districts, yielding revenues of Rs 66 lakhs per annum. Rana Bhim Singh, the thirteenth ruler of Gohad, succeeded in seizing the historic fortress of Gwalior in 1761, but lost it to the Mahrattas within six years. Burning with resentment against the Scindia, his successor Chhatra Singh did everything to oppose them. Any enemy of Scindia became his friend and ally. He assisted the Emperor when he returned to Delhi in 1771, receiving titles and honours unknown to his house before. In 1779, he entered into treaty relations with the British and joined forces with them against Scindia. The treaty terms stipulated that, at the conclusion of peace between the English and Mahrattas, all the territories then in his possession should be guaranteed to him, and he would be protected from any future invasion by Scindia. This protection was subsequently withdrawn, the rana having been found guilty of treachery.

By Bus :- You can also opt for government buses or private buses in order to reach Dholpur. This is the easiest option, although not the cheapest or the most comfortable.

From Agra(60KM) and Gwalior(65KM) it will take hardly 2 Hrs. Fare will range from 60 to 70 Rs.

From Dehli(250KM) it takes 6-7 hrs. and fare will be 250-300 Rs.

For Jaipur(255KM) take 5-6 hrs and fare will be charge as 200-250 rs.

By Train : -The town of Dholpur has a railway station and although this is not a major railway station, but it is on NCR (North CenterRailway)trains from many major cities will be available here.

The main cities that Dholpur is connected to through rail are Delhi, Jhansi, Amritsar, Jaipur,Mumbai and Okha. Train fares from Delhi will range around Rs 133 to 157.
